HomeNewsUSASouthwestArizonaArizona – fishing with small crayfish

TIP OF THE WEEK
We sampled Kinnikinick Lake southeast of Flagstaff Monday to look at growth of fish. Based in part on the results, our Aquatics Wildlife Specialist Chuck Benedict recommends fishing small crayfish-imitating crankbaits or small spoons to catch brown trout.
Another possible way to fish is to catch some grasshoppers around the lake and fish them on the surface during evenings — few fish can resist a big fat grasshopper kicking on the surface of a lake or stream.
During the sampling, our biologists caught brown trout, tiger trout and rainbow trout in their nets. The brown trout were feeding on crayfish and minnows. Biologists caught fish near the weedbeds on both sides of the boat ramp, and two brown trout in a net that was set on the bottom in 20 feet of water.
This is also the time of year when catfishing can be good at Kinnikinick.
THE REEL DEAL
Top picks this week are striped bass at night at Lake Pleasant, throwing top-water lures early at Lake Mohave, and trout fishing on the creeks below the Mogollon Rim or at Silver Creek, pictured above from Friday, where regulations are catch-and-keep with bait and a six-trout daily limit — the upper section is closed to fishing.
But don’t count out going for walleye (along with a mixed bag of species) at Show Low Lake or Fool Hollow Lake.

Rose Canyon Lake

Mike C. and a group of anglers caught this mess of rainbow trout (pictured in basket at center) at Rose Canyon Lake near Tucson on Saturday, Aug. 5. Mike said the action came during the morning with PowerBait (green, rainbow, orange) and 18-inch leaders. The group reported landing about 20 in a few hours worth of work.
